Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA)

Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA), commonly known as coronary angioplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure used to open clogged heart arteries. It is a vital treatment for coronary artery disease (CAD), which can cause chest pain (angina) and heart attacks. At Cardio Plus Heart Care, Dr. Jignesh Patel specializes in PTCA, offering advanced and compassionate care to restore your heart’s health.

What is Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)?

Coronary artery disease occurs when the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked due to plaque buildup (atherosclerosis). This can reduce blood flow to the heart, causing chest pain, shortness of breath, or other symptoms. In severe cases, CAD can lead to heart attacks.

Indications for PTCA

  • Angina: Severe or persistent chest pain due to reduced blood flow to the heart.
  • Heart Attack: During or after a heart attack to restore blood flow to the affected area.
  • Blocked or Narrowed Arteries: Identified during diagnostic tests such as an angiogram.
  • Other Symptoms: Shortness of breath, fatigue, or arrhythmias associated with blocked coronary arteries.

The PTCA Procedure

  • Preparation: You will be given a local anesthetic to numb the area where the catheter will be inserted, typically the groin or wrist. Sedation may also be provided for your comfort.
  • Catheter Insertion: A thin, flexible tube (catheter) with a balloon at its tip is inserted into the artery and guided to the site of the blockage using X-ray imaging.
  • Balloon Inflation: Once in place, the balloon is inflated to compress the plaque against the artery wall, widening the artery and restoring blood flow.
  • Stent Placement: In many cases, a stent (a small wire mesh tube) is placed in the artery to keep it open. The stent remains in the artery permanently to help prevent re-narrowing.
  • Completion: The catheter and balloon are removed, and the insertion site is closed. The procedure typically takes about 1 to 2 hours.

Benefits of PTCA

  • Minimally Invasive: Smaller incisions and shorter recovery time compared to traditional surgery.
  • Quick Relief: Immediate improvement in blood flow, relieving symptoms such as chest pain and shortness of breath.
  • Improved Heart Function: Helps prevent heart attacks and improves overall heart function.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life: Enables you to return to daily activities and exercise with fewer symptoms.
